This is basic optimization, and keywords should ideally be placed in the page names (URL’s), titles, meta tags (found in the page code), headings, added as links to other pages on the site and links into the website, included as bold text, and should appear in the first sentence on a sites page and in the last fifty.

Not only is this basic job vital, there are alternative longer term issues to carry out too. Another important thing to mention is that the HTML code that the site is written in needs to be clean and easy for a search engine to follow. Some pages that they do find hard to follow sometimes are pages containing, or built with, flash, frames or javascript. They also do not find pages containing lots and lots of text, or not enough of it, very easy to follow.

Part of the search engine optimization process has to occur away from the website, once it has been prepared properly. This includes longer term work such as submitting the website domain name to relevant smaller search engines and directories (for example a local store may register with a regionally based directory), writing articles and in very basic terms getting links back to the website from other relevant and well ranking sites.

All of these issues should be covered at the very minimum. Not only does SEO play a significant part in keeping a website up to date and relevant in the eyes of a search engine, but it plays a large part in ensuring the site and its content is useful to its human visitors too.
